Yamunotri

Places to Visit

Janki Chatti
Janki Chatti is famed for its hot springs and trekking, and also acts as an alternative base for treks to Yamunotri. The place is surrounded by huge mountains from all sides, and is a unique destination to relax and be immersed in devotion. You can either test the adventurer in you or admire the beauty of the gigantic mountains all day long.

Yamunotri Temple
The temple is dedicated to the holy Goddess Yamuna, and is considered as the birthplace of the sacred river Yamuna. The temple exudes a magical sight with enormous mountain peaks and surreal glaciers surrounding it. River Yamuna flows through the side of the temple, and houses a giant black marble stone idol of the Goddess.

Hanuman Chatti
One of the chief attractions here is the Hanuman Chitti, which is a base camp for some of the most exciting and major trekking trails in the Himalayan Mountains. The place is abundant with scenic natural beauty, and is a base camp for the famous Char Dham Yatra. This is a perfect place for those seeking relaxation and adventure.

Surya Kund
Dedicated to the Sun God, the Surya Kund is believed to be the father of Yamuna. The hot water spring here is at a temperature of 1900 F. Devotees often dip cloth pouches full of rice and potatoes here to be cooked. This cooked food is then offered to the temple.

Saptarishi Kund
Another prominent must visit place here is the Saptarishi Kund. It is considered to be the place where Yamuna originates. You can trek the 10 km path from Yamunotri, preferably with a guide. You will also meet many exotic birds and glaciers on your way.

Trekking in Yamunotri
The Yamunotri Trek is perfect for both beginner as well as expert trekkers. Walking through the rugged terrains amid the snow covered mountains is a challenging yet exhilarating journey. There are two routes for this trek- from Hanuman Chatti, which is a 13 Km trek and from Janki Chatti, which is a 6 km trek. The pious Yamunotri Temple, perched on the top is worth the climb of three to four hours.

Kharsali
Kharsali is a beautiful picnic spot located just off Janki Chatti. The place is sprinkled with a number of thermal springs, waterfalls and Rolling Meadows covered by Oaks and conifers.

Best time to visit
Best time to visit Yamunotri is between May to June and September to November. October to March marks winter season in Yamunotri. In this season, the place also experiences snowfall as temperatures falls below 0 degree.

By Air - Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest domestic airport, located 317 km away from the main Badrinath town.
By Train - Those travelling by train can land at the Dehradun Junction.

By Road - Road connectivity is also possible from nearby cities.
